A Fable about Dark Matter

A stalwart of the theoretical scientific community recently informed a room full of lay-people that as much as 80% of the Universe is composed of Dark Matter.

"And what," asked one attendee, "is this sooty stuff?"

"We are still investigating," responded the suddenly bright-eyed scientist, "and we have several theories."

"Such as. . ." prompted the lissome young lady.

"Well, if we assume that 'dark matter' is mass and that, as per e=mc squared, it can convert into energy, then this certainly suggests that we, here on Earth, might be influenced by 'energies' or 'forces' other than those from our sun."

"What you mean by 'influenced'? Doesn't the light of Sol provide all the energy that makes Life-As-We-Know-It happen?"

"That's just the point. Such visible energy is a mere 20% of the forces moving through the universe at any moment. It seems reasonable that that other 80% of invisible force must have some effect on living creatures. Don't you think?"

"You mean to say that we are four-fifths 'Mysteries of the Dark' and one-fifth 'Sunny Dispositions'?"

"Not exactly, but your math is corr. . ."

"So," she interrupted, "no wonder that we're out of control. I mean how could a person manage all that obscure uncertainty?"
